What's Inside the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in episode 6 forces them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.
Heads Up: This article details significant events for the second part of the final season.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the encounter originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is known about his research, the case almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.
A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
