Several days post the devastating hurricane pummelled into the island's west coast with unprecedented strength, locals in affected areas by the shoreline are still desperately waiting for help.

Many of the roads are clogged with rubble and residents remain cut off with limited provisions, lacking utilities, and unknown restoration dates.

Increasing Casualties

The government said on the weekend that a minimum of 28 persons in Jamaica have lost their lives following the hurricane's impact as a monster category five storm with winds reaching 185 mph.

That is a near 50% jump in the casualty count recently, and totals might grow as officials clear their way into new parts of the island in the near future.

Area-Specific Damage

This particular parish is estimated to experience the next largest count of potential fatalities, following St Elizabeth to the south east. The hurricane's center struck approximately between the bordering areas. Within that parish an approximately nine out of ten houses have been wrecked.

'What comes next is unclear', characterized the situation as ''absolute ruin'.

Immediate Challenges

Local inhabitants in this coastal town, a coastal town and commercial hub on the perimeter of Westmoreland, say the delay in receiving help is increasingly difficult.

Personal Stories

Within a small settlement adjacent to the coastal town, one affected individual supported himself on fractured building material. Nearby, the community he's always lived in his entire life has been demolished, including his income source.

"Everyone here is ruined," he said. The fishing infrastructure was demolished and is now "completely gone"

"The hurricane destroyed everything," he revealed, including his fishing boat, which he describes as "mashed up"

Located below the structure of a heavily ruined edifice, Roy Perry said he has experienced complete loss, but "we must maintain belief and the hope is up still"

"Must continue. Will not surrender," he said.

Farming Consequences

It is the same tone struck by Oreth Jones, sitting in the bed of his truck offering remaining produce – his final agricultural products that was protected from the hurricane.

Concerning his cultivation area, he said: "Everything is destroyed. Total ruin resulted" But he quickly followed up with: "We have to give God thanks we're alive"

Foreign Aid

Meanwhile, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

United States officials stated that its crisis response group had reached the island. Other nations like the United Kingdom have also promised significant monetary support and critical resources.
