Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's New President.
After a definitive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has secured the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Built On Security and Migration
Recognized for his strong socially conservative views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to address growing insecurity and significantly curb migration.
He consistently cited foreigners, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the election cycle, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.
His plans featured controversial measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Regional Wave
Many observers view Kast's success as part of a wider conservative shift in Latin America, coming after this year's electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts further describe it as a continuation of the predictable rotation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Strong Mandate
In spite of his sweeping popular vote triumph, Kast will not have an absolute majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if all conservative parties are counted together.
This political reality might complicate his plans, including a pledge to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a plan for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many questions about how a Kast presidency will be that are uncertain because he has not said how he will implement them," noted a political expert.
The analyst added, "In terms of the economy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. However where there is far less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his flagship issue throughout the campaign."
