When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.

In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official full international.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
