The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks advance
Citizens have come together across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions indicated that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies distribution
- Future governance of the region
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location appears as home any longer and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."
"After we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman stated: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis desire the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the area of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the evening comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.
"My family are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, especially my youngest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said another two dead people had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the southern area, medics said.
