Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game winless start to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the team - are among the names to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves board as they begin the search of hiring a new head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising choice given he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
