Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has announced what is being described as the most significant changes to tackle unauthorized immigration "in modern times".

The proposed measures, patterned after the more rigorous system adopted by Scandinavian policymakers, makes refugee status temporary, narrows the legal challenge options and includes entry restrictions on states that impede deportations.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

People granted asylum in the UK will only be allowed to reside in the country on a provisional basis, with their situation reassessed at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This implies people could be repatriated to their home country if it is judged "safe".

This approach follows the policy in that European nation, where asylum seekers get 24-month visas and must request extensions when they terminate.

Authorities states it has already started assisting people to go back to Syria by choice, following the toppling of the Assad regime.

It will now start exploring compulsory deportations to the region and other states where people have not regularly been deported to in recent years.

Asylum recipients will also need to be living in the UK for twenty years before they can apply for permanent residence - increased from the present 60 months.
