British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."
In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
