Despite Overwhelming Success, Expedition 33 Developers Plan to Maintain Studio Compact

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is not only a top Game of the Year contender, but also a massive financial hit. Developer the development team and publisher their publishing partner announced that the game surpassed five million copies in sales, and that’s in spite of its status as a launch-day addition through the Game Pass service.

The game's performance was a shock to the developers. I firmly believed that we would have an enjoyable experience achieving moderate market performance,” a key executive commented.

A technical director noted this title's Metacritic rating, which currently sits at 93, came as “maybe the biggest shock to the team relative to “our initial expectations and the actual outcome of the field was. Once it was published all staff members celebrated excitedly. The energy was electric.”

The positive reception prompted Sandfall developing a complimentary expansion for the game featuring fresh areas, adversaries, plus epic encounters, reportedly will release sometime soon.

Nevertheless, despite the game's evolution, fans shouldn't anticipate they'll hire extensively. “We have a great team under clear creative leadership who has a great vision for the project plus upcoming innovations. We'd like to keep the close-knit size that led to our success then develop large projects one by one,” the executive added.

The size of Sandfall sparked significant conversation upon the title's release. A few well-known creators, including renowned designers, looked at the development group as a perfect example for game development. Despite being truly compact compared to its AAA counterparts, checking the title's staff list reveals many individuals worked on it; the French studio contracted a Korean team for animation work, to illustrate.

“We plan to recruit a little more certainly when facing an increase in development in upcoming years,” the producer stated. “However, I envision essentially a craft studio comprising a handful really talented people capable of producing collective masterpieces.” It was stated that Sandfall’s vision as a studio “is more to maintain the successful elements that enabled this success in the first place.”

While it may be not the right time to disclose concrete plans about future projects — believe me, I tried to get them to — the developers understand what’s at its core. “The turn-based aspect, forms the foundation of our creations,” the lead programmer remarked. “The timing isn't right to be able to tell what will interest us, yet we must to stay true to our creative core with [a] strong narrative universe and engaging mechanics that excites us.”

They added how this game started with the visionary pursuing his ideal project. We aspire this approach we can continue with upcoming games.”
